Local knowledge, global expertise
Arup are an independent firm of designers, planners, engineers, consultants and technical specialists offering a broad range of professional services. Through our innovative work, we make a positive difference to the world.
In 1946, Danish philosopher and engineer Ove Arup founded Arup with an initial focus on structural engineering. Arup first came to the world’s attention with the structural design of the Sydney Opera House by Danish architect Jørn Utzon, followed by the work on the Centre Pompidou in Paris. Arup have since grown into a truly multi-disciplinary organization.
“Great things can result when all relevant design decisions have been considered together and have been integrated into a whole by a well organised team” Ove Arup
From our office in Copenhagen, which opened in 2012, we provide a collaborative and holistic approach to complex projects drawing on a company-wide collective knowledge of more than 14,000 specialists; allowing us to apply international expertise locally.
We have delivered landmark projects for years in Denmark – whether as the leading member of the design team for Øresund Bridge or as engineers for the Fjordforbindelsen Frederikssund. We have worked with Copenhagen Airport, Region Hovedstaden, Vejdirektoratet and Metroselskabet, to name a few, providing thoughtful, clear-sighted and innovative solutions.
Arup looks at every project with a fresh perspective. The firm supports and promotes in its people a willingness to think laterally and take a creative approach, which produces ideas that may not be immediately obvious, but in return delivers the best solutions – all supported by Arup’s ownership structure. The firm is owned in a trust on behalf of its staff ensuring an independence of spirit and dedication in pursuit of technical excellence.
Arup invests heavily in research and development, which forms the basis of its approach to projects and keeps it focused on ‘future proofing’ its designs, as well as current best practice. Arup recognises that to produce work of quality, we need to fully embrace the skills, abilities and knowledge that only a diverse and inclusive workforce can deliver, and we are committed to promoting the value of diversity and equality.
The firm’s commitment to sustainability guides our approach and is at the heart of every project. The firm is acutely aware of its responsibility in designing and influencing the built environment, to do the best possible work for current and future generations.
The result is solutions that work for clients and for the people who use, live and work in and around them, and which shape a better world.
